Dr. Monica Thongam Nakra is an experienced academician, author, and government-certified psychologist with over 19 years of experience in the field of mental health. She currently serves as an Assistant Professor and In-Charge of the Department of Psychology at Lingaya’s Vidyapeeth.
Dr.Monica began her academic journey with a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology and Post Graduate Degree from HNB Garhwal University (Central University) and obtained her MSc in Psychotherapy and Psychological Counselling in 2008 from IPMS, Mumbai. To further enhance her skills, she completed a Bachelor of Education from a Central University. Additionally, she pursued a Foundation Course in Special Education from Bhoj University in Madhya Pradesh, a Certificate Course in Psychological First Aid from Johns Hopkins University, and a Certificate in Teaching English from IGNOU in 2010. Dr. Nakra completed her Ph.D. in Psychology at Manav Rachna International Institute of Research and Studies in Faridabad.
Throughout her career, Dr Monica has held various roles, including special educator, mental health Counsellor, Social worker, Consultant psychologist, Academic Coordinator, faculty trainer, and Teacher, in reputed organisations such as Bajaj Institute of Technology, DIT University, Tender Heart, Counsel India, and Astro Talk.
Dr.Monica has provided counselling to young people dealing with a wide range of mental health conditions, including major depressive disorder, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, and addiction-related issues. She has also offered emergency support in critical situations such as suicidality, homicidally, and sexual assault. As part of her commitment to mental health, she has collaborated closely with psychiatrists, psychologists, clinical social workers, and other mental health professionals to organise workshops and deliver lectures.
She is currently serving as a faculty advisor for three departmental student clubs at the University and is an official member of the Student Counselling Committee and the University Research Committee at Lingaya’s Vidyapeeth.
To further her commitment to social service, Dr. Monica is registered with the Rehabilitation Council of India. She is a Lifetime Member of the Counsellors Council of India, an Executive Member of the Society for Addiction Psychology, an International Affiliate of the American Psychological Association, and a Professional Member of the International Council of Psychologists. During the COVID-19 pandemic, she served as an online mental health counsellor through RCI and volunteered with numerous national and international organisations. Dr. Monica is dedicated to educating and guiding young people on how to lead productive, fulfilling lives that contribute positively to society. In recognition of her work in social service and youth mental health, she received the Women Economic Forum of India’s Exceptional Leader of Excellence Award in 2022.
