Home » Vocational Training: The National Scheme for ITI Upgradation
India is on a mission to become a global leader in manufacturing and innovation by 2047, and skilled youth are at the heart of this vision. The National Scheme for Industrial Training Institute (ITI) Upgradation, approved by the Union Cabinet in May 2025, is a game-changer for vocational education. With a massive budget of ₹60,000 crore, this centrally sponsored scheme aims to modernize 1,000 government ITIs and establish five National Centres of Excellence (NCoEs) for skilling. For students, this means better training, industry-relevant skills, and brighter career prospects.
Let’s dive into what this scheme is all about and why it’s a big deal for you.
Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) are post-secondary schools in India that provide hands-on training in various technical and non-technical trades. Established in the 1950s under the Directorate General of Training (DGT), Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, ITIs offer courses ranging from six months to two years. These programs cover over 130 specialties, such as electrician, mechanic, welding, and even service-sector roles like hospitality and IT.
As of 2025, India has around 14,615 ITIs with an enrolment of 14.40 lakh students, a 47% growth since 2014. Upon completion, students take the All India Trade Test (AITT) to earn a National Trade Certificate (NTC), opening doors to jobs or apprenticeships.
ITIs are the backbone of India’s vocational education system, offering several key features:
The National Scheme for ITI Upgradation is a bold step to address long-standing gaps in vocational training. Here’s how it benefits students and the economy:
This ₹60,000 crore initiative, funded by the Central Government (₹30,000 crore), states (₹20,000 crore), and industry (₹10,000 crore), with 50% of the central share co-financed by the Asian Development Bank and World Bank, is a transformative investment in the future.
While the scheme is promising, it faces challenges:
Looking ahead, the scheme’s focus on industry-driven training and modern trades positions ITIs to meet future demands. By 2047, as India aims for developed-nation status, ITI graduates will drive growth in sectors like green energy and advanced manufacturing. The integration of vocational and general education, as envisioned by the National Education Policy, will further boost ITIs’ appeal.
While the scheme focuses on institutional upgrades, students can benefit by enrolling in upgraded ITIs. Here’s how to get started:
Stay updated via official channels like the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship or your state’s ITI website for admission deadlines and course details.
The National Scheme for ITI Upgradation is a landmark effort to empower students like you with skills for a brighter future. By modernizing 1,000 ITIs, training 20 lakh youth, and fostering industry partnerships, it addresses critical gaps in vocational education. Despite challenges like infrastructure and perception, the scheme’s focus on future-ready skills and global competitiveness makes it a cornerstone of India’s Viksit Bharat vision.
