India Shines at IMO 2025: 7th Rank with 3 Gold Medals

India has done it again! Our young math wizards made us proud at the 66th International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) 2025, held in Sunshine Coast, Australia, from July 10 to 21. Competing against 110 countries and 630 students, Team India grabbed the 7th spot globally with an impressive haul of three gold medals, two silver medals, and one bronze medal. With an impressive team total of 193/252, they established India’s highest score in IMO history! Let’s dive into this exciting achievement and why it matters for students like you.

What is the IMO?

The International Mathematical Olympiad is like the Olympics for math-loving high school students. Every year, the brightest minds from around the world tackle six super-tough math problems over two days. These problems cover fun topics like algebra, geometry, number theory, and combinatorics. Each student can score up to 42 points, making a team total of 252. It’s a big deal, and India’s performance shows we’re a rising star in global math!

India’s Stellar Performance

Here’s what Team India achieved at IMO 2025:

  • Three Gold Medals: Gold medals went to Kanav Talwar (Delhi, 37 pts), Aarav Gupta (Delhi, 35 pts), and Adhitya Mangudy Venkata Ganesh (Maharashtra, 35 pts).
  • Two Silver Medals: Silver medals were won by Abel George (Karnataka) and Aadish Jain (Delhi)
  • One Bronze Medal: Earned by Archit Manas (Delhi).
  • Record-Breaking Score: The team’s 193 points beat India’s previous best, making this a historic moment.
  • Top 10 Finish: This is the third time India has ranked 7th (after 1998 and 2001) and the seventh time in the top 10 since our debut in 1989.

This isn’t just a one-time win. India has been rocking the IMO lately, with 12 gold medals from 2019 to 2025, including nine in the last three years (2023–2025). Last year, in 2024, we even hit 4th place with four golds!

Who Helped Make This Happen?

The Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education (HBCSE), under the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, trains and selects India’s IMO team. Their rigorous exam series – starting with the Pre-Regional Mathematical Olympiad (PRMO), progressing to the Regional Mathematical Olympiad (RMO), and culminating in the Indian National Mathematical Olympiad (INMO) – helps discover India’s brightest math students.

The 2025 team was led by Prof. Shanta Laishram (Indian Statistical Institute, Delhi) and Dr. Mainak Ghosh (ISI Bengaluru), with mentors like Atul Shatavart Nadig (MIT student) and Dr. Rijul Saini guiding the way.

Why This Matters for You

India’s success at IMO 2025 isn’t just about medals—it’s a huge inspiration for students! Here’s why:

  • Math is Cool: Solving tricky problems can be fun and rewarding, like cracking a puzzle.
  • Global Stage: India’s 7th rank shows our students can compete with the best, like teams from China, the USA, and South Korea.
  • Future Opportunities: IMO winners often study math or STEM at top universities, opening doors to exciting careers.
  • Inspiration to Learn: This achievement proves hard work and passion can take you far.

How Can You Get Involved?

Want to be the next IMO star? Here’s how to start:

  1. Join Math Olympiads: Sign up for exams like PRMO or IOQM through HBCSE or the Mathematics Teachers’ Association (India).
  2. Practice Problem-Solving: Try puzzles in algebra, geometry, or number theory to sharpen your skills.
  3. Get Support: Talk to your teachers or join math clubs for guidance.
  4. Stay Curious: Math is all about exploring and having fun with numbers!

A Bright Future for Indian Math

India’s IMO 2025 performance shows our students are among the world’s best. With every member of the six-student team winning a medal, it’s clear our math education is getting stronger. This success encourages more schools and programs to focus on STEM, inspiring students like you to dream big.

Let’s celebrate Kanav, Aarav, Adhitya, Abel, Aadish, and Archit for their amazing work! Their victory at IMO 2025 is a proud moment for India and a reminder that with dedication, you too can shine on the global stage. Keep solving, keep learning, and who knows? Maybe you’ll be part of India’s next record-breaking team!
