Home » Math Day 2025: Honoring Ramanujan & Beauty of Numbers Now!
Every year on December 22, India celebrates National Mathematics Day to honor one of the greatest mathematical minds the world has ever seen—Srinivasa Ramanujan. Born in 1887, Ramanujan wasn’t just good at math; he completely reshaped it with ideas that still amaze scientists today.
The 2025 theme, “Mathematics, Art, and Creativity,” reminds us that math isn’t just about formulas and exams. It’s also about patterns, music, design, and imagination. In this blog, we’ll explore Ramanujan’s inspiring life, why this day matters, exciting events, fun facts, and easy ways you can join the celebration. Let’s see math in a whole new light!
Srinivasa Ramanujan grew up in a small town in Tamil Nadu, and from a very young age, numbers fascinated him. By just 12 years old, he had taught himself advanced trigonometry—no coaching classes, no internet, just pure curiosity and passion. Pretty incredible, right?
Although Ramanujan struggled with formal education and didn’t complete college, his talent was undeniable. In 1913, he wrote a letter filled with complex formulas to British mathematician G.H. Hardy. Hardy immediately recognized his genius and invited him to Cambridge University.
There, Ramanujan produced over 3,900 mathematical formulas, many related to infinite series, number theory, and calculating the value of pi. Sadly, his life was short—he passed away at just 32 years old in 1920—but his ideas live on. Even today, scientists use his work in fields like black hole physics and advanced computing. That’s the power of true brilliance.
India officially began celebrating National Mathematics Day in 2012, following an announcement by then Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh during Ramanujan’s 125th birth anniversary.
The goal is simple: Make math less scary and more meaningful.
Math plays a role in almost everything around us—from building bridges and designing smartphones to creating video games and predicting weather. On this day, schools and colleges across the country organize activities to show students how useful and exciting math can be.
The 2025 theme, “Mathematics, Art, and Creativity,” highlights something important: math isn’t rigid or boring. It’s imaginative. Just like Ramanujan used creativity to discover new ideas, students today are encouraged to think beyond textbooks and see math as an adventure.
This year’s celebrations are bigger and more colorful than ever. Schools and universities across India are hosting:
In cities like Delhi and Mumbai, experts discuss how math connects with technology, space research, architecture, and art. Many schools are also organizing online contests, so students can participate from home.
One of the biggest highlights? Creative math activities—like designing geometric art, making patterns, building models, and exploring math through drawings and crafts. These events prove that learning math can be hands-on, visual, and fun.

Math really does connect history, science, creativity, and fun!
You don’t need to be a math genius to enjoy this day. Here are some easy and fun ways to take part:
These activities make math feel less like homework and more like play—while still boosting your confidence for exams.
National Mathematics Day 2025 is a reminder that math belongs to everyone. With its theme of Mathematics, Art, and Creativity, this year encourages us to explore numbers with imagination and curiosity.
Ramanujan’s journey proves that passion and creativity can change the world—no matter where you start. So, try a new activity, share a cool math fact, or simply look at numbers with fresh eyes today.
